Welfare webinar: Improving the lives of laboratory zebrafish

Zebrafish are commonly used in biological and biomedical research and interest in how to maintain and promote higher standards of welfare for this species continues to grow.

In this webinar, Professor Robert Gerlai explored how an ethological approach, grounded in an understanding of zebrafish behaviour and ecology, can improve care of zebrafish in the laboratory and scientific outcomes. He shared findings from his laboratory into the effects of tank size, stocking density, salinity and handling methods on zebrafish welfare and behaviour. He also highlighted the need for more systematic studies into the optimal conditions for laboratory zebrafish.
