EDA workshops

Supplementing our online support to improve research integrity through the use of the Experimental Design Assistant.

Summary

This workshop will give attendees an introduction to the Experimental Design Assistant (EDA) and how this free online tool can support good experimental design when using animals in research. The EDA is supported by a host of help pages, tutorials and regular online demonstrations, this in-person workshop is designed to cover much of this material to act as a unified introduction to its use. This interactive workshop can be further expanded through 1:1 discussions with delegates.

  • Audience: Established and early career researchers.
  • Format: Interactive workshop.
  • Length: Half-day, approximately 2.5+ hours.

Objectives

  • Understand the principles of good experimental design and how these are reinforced by the EDA.
  • Learn how to create a diagram in the EDA.
  • Learn how to use the tools within the EDA to improve experimental design, including critique, sample size calculator and randomisation sequence generator.
  • Be aware of the further resources available to support use of the EDA and good experimental design.

Audience

The primary audience for this workshop is established and early career researchers using animals as a part of their research. This workshop would also be suitable for graduate students that will be engaging with in vivo research.

Attendees will need to have an EDA account which is free to create but no experience of using the system is necessary.

Format

This material is typically delivered as an in-person half-day workshop. Regular online demonstrations are also available, check the events page for upcoming dates.

This workshop consists of two parts with an optional third component:

  1. Key concepts in the design of animal experiments and an introduction to the EDA (approximately one hour).
  2. Live build-along EDA diagram session (approximately 1.5 hours).
  3. OPTIONAL Pre-booked 1:1 meetings between researchers and experimental design expert.

What we need from you

  • The build-along component requires all attendees to have access to a computer and internet access, so a venue with ample computers or power sockets to accommodate delegates' own devices as well as reliable network/WiFi signal will be necessary.
  • A minimum of 15 attendees for the main components of the workshop.
  • The optional 1:1 sessions will only be run if a minimum of four delegates express an interest in this component. These can be conducted in a separate space from the main workshop.
  • To discuss these requirements or to find out more, please contact us

What we will provide

  • A number of staff with experimental design expertise to present the initial talk and facilitate the build-along session and 1:1 discussions.
  • A pdf copy of the slides after the workshop for dissemination to attendees.
  • The members of staff that delivered the workshop will also be contactable via email for further follow-up.
