The Centre for Blood Research at the University of York and the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute are hosting a meeting to bring together leading figures in the field of haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) research and provide training in culture methods.

Programme

The main scientific meeting will take place on 23 April 2026, with hands on workshops taking place the day before and day after.

Meeting sessions include:

  • Technology developments in HSCs.
  • Normal and malignant haematopoiesis modelling in expansion cultures.
  • Therapeutic applications of HSC expansion cultures.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Satoshi Yamazaki, University of Tokyo.
  • Elisa Laurenti, University of Cambridge.
  • Hiro Nakauchi, Stanford University.
  • Marieke Essers, Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and Experimental Medicine.
  • Timm Schroeder, ETH Zurich.
Please submit an abstract by 15 December 2025 to be considered for an oral or poster presentation.

Hands-on workshops

Two workshops will take place around the main meeting. The cost of the pre- and post-meeting workshops is included in registration for those who wish to attend. Places are limited and registration for these sessions is essential.

  • 22 April 2026: Hands-on HSC expansion (supported by STEMCELL Technologies).
  • 24 April 2026: Image-enabled cell sorting (supported by BD Biosciences).

This meeting is co-organised by Professor David Kent and supported by an NC3Rs Partnerships and impact award. Through a previous NC3Rs PhD studentship, David has developed an in vitro method to confirm mouse haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) functionality that replaces the need to transplant cells into recipient mice.
