If you are attending the Institute of Animal Technology (IAT) Congress this year, visit Dr Khia Dobbinson (NC3Rs Programme Manager – Animal Welfare) at stall number 29 in the exhibition hall to learn more about NC3Rs resources and support for animal technicians. We are also running a workshop to support the uptake of refined handling techniques consistently across different research settings and scenarios.
Workshop: Troubleshooting refined mouse handling
Thursday 26 March, 11.00 – 13.00
This session aims to address the barriers to using refined mouse ‘pickup’ methods (e.g. a tunnel or cupped hands) and provide practical solutions to support the use of refined handling consistently across different research settings and scenarios. It is suitable for anyone interested in learning more, from staff based in facilities where a mixture of tail pickup and refined methods are used through to those at the very start of their refined mouse handling journey.
The session will be delivered by Khia and experienced technical staff from Newcastle University, where an institution-wide refined handling policy is in place. It will cover:
- Topics including mouse temperament, mouse escapes and handling efficiency.
- Tips on staff training, communication with colleagues and maintenance of habits.
- An opportunity to share your own experiences and challenges with refined handling.
- Guidance on troubleshooting and taking steps towards refined pickup methods becoming the institutional standard.
It will also provide a point of contact for ongoing peer-to-peer support throughout the process of change at your institution.
