While statistics in science often focuses on data analysis, considering statistics in full before your research begins is critical to good experimental design. Statisticians have an important role in ensuring the rigour of study design and reducing the number of animals wasted in experiments that produce unreliable results.
The Royal Statistical Society’s annual conference brings together statisticians and data scientists from around the world. Dr Esther Pearl (Programme Manager – Experimental Design) will be presenting a session on the importance of statistics for rigorous biomedical research study design with Drs Penny Reynolds and William Browne (statisticians and ARRIVE guidelines authors), focusing on experiments involving animals. Esther will showcase tools and resources developed by the NC3Rs to guide researchers through statistical questions in experimental design and share how they can be used to support the biostatisticians they collaborate with or consult.
