This event aims to create a collaborative space where researchers, clinicians and neurosurgeons can connect, exchange knowledge and discuss practical considerations of accessing human brain tissue and its use to replace animal models in neuroscience.

The afternoon will feature short presentations from experts, followed by an informal networking session with refreshments.

Speakers and topics include:

  • Key considerations and practicalities for using human tissue in research.
Maria Thom, UCL Institute of Neurology.
  • Transitioning from rodent to human live tissue slices: The Oxford experience.
    Martin Gillies, Oxford Functional Neurosurgery.
  • Navigating ethics and governance in human brain tissue research.
Ciaran S. Hill, UCL Cancer Institute.

This event is supported by an NC3Rs early career engagement award to Dr Olga Tiurikova to maximise the impact of an NC3Rs-funded project to develop replacement technologies for glial research.
