Registration Details
Despite the widespread use of Xenopus in research, there remains relatively little published guidance on assessing and refining the welfare of laboratory frogs. As a result, many refinements are developed through the experience of those who work closely with these animals on a day-to-day basis. Sharing these insights is important for identifying opportunities to improve housing, husbandry and care, while supporting both animal welfare and scientific outcomes.
In this webinar, Rue Jones-Green, Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer and Named Information Officer at the University of Cambridge, will discuss approaches to assessing Xenopus welfare and share practical refinements from her own experience that can be implemented within existing facilities.
Rue’s talk will cover:
- Challenges associated with assessing welfare in laboratory Xenopus.
- Considerations for housing and environmental enrichment.
- Limitations of commonly used housing systems and opportunities for refinement.
- Practical improvements that can be implemented within existing husbandry and management practices.

In the latest edition of Springer’s Xenopus Methods and Protocols, Esther Pearl (NC3Rs Programme Manager) contributed to two chapters covering key refinements for the use of Xenopus such as environmental enrichment and welfare indicators at different life stages, alongside good breeding and colony management practices to reduce the number of frogs involved in research.
