NC3Rs: National Centre for the Replacement Refinement & Reduction of Animals in Research

Only Good Antibodies-NC3Rs Antibody Champions scheme

The NC3Rs and the Only Good Antibodies community (OGA) are working together to recruit early career researchers who will drive the validation and use of better antibodies.

At a glance

This scheme is aimed at early career researchers who want to help drive the validation and use of high-quality antibodies across the research community. Over a 12-month programme, OGA will provide training in antibody selection and validation. Antibody Champions will take this knowledge back to their own institutions where they will share guidance on reagent selection and validation and promote best practice locally. This will include highlighting the advantages of using non-animal derived antibodies over traditional monoclonal/polyclonal antibodies, and how to search for or generate antibody validation data.

Eligibility

We are looking for motivated early career researchers, including PhD students and postdoctoral scientists, who are keen to promote best research practice and drive change. Champions should be UK-based and working within academia or industry (applicants from companies selling research antibodies will not be eligible for the scheme). Applicants are not expected to already be experts in antibody validation as all training will be provided.

The following would be beneficial, but are not essential:

  • Practical experience of the use of antibodies in experimental research.
  • An understanding of the importance of antibody validation.
  • Communication skills including experience of presenting scientific content to an audience.

Expectations

Champions will be expected to remain part of the scheme for its 12-month duration to receive full training in antibody selection and use. There will also be an in-person training session on influencing and communication provided by leadership trainers Inspire Change. Following training, Champions will be expected to:

  • Deliver training sessions to relevant doctoral training programmes and other research postgraduates within their institution (at least one training session during the 12-month programme).
  • Distribute resources around antibody validation within their department.
  • Distribute surveys to help understand current attitudes towards non-animal antibody use and antibody validation within their department, both pre and post training/resource distribution.

The scheme will launch with an in-person event in central London on 30 April 2026. If you apply to become an Antibody Champion, please keep this date free.
