Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival which brings researchers to your local pub/cafe/space to share their scientific discoveries with you - no prior knowledge required. This year, the NC3Rs are sponsoring events in Birmingham, Leeds and London. NC3Rs-funded scientists will be sharing the latest advancements and innovations in 3Rs research, and how their work is pioneering better science that replaces, reduces and refines the use of animals.

Join us at the Night Owl in Birmingham on 24 May to hear how scientists at the University of Birmingham are using new technologies and innovative approaches to replace the use of animals in research. We would like to thank the Pint of Science team at the University of Birmingham for hosting this event.

The 3Rs: Alternatives and Innovation in Animal Research

An animal-free future for heart disease research

Max Cumberland is working with Dr Katja Gehmlich to develop a stem cell derived model of the heart. Max's PhD studentship is co-funded by the British Heart Foundation and the NC3Rs. Max will talk about how stem cells models have the potential to replace the use of mice in cardiovascular research and his work growing a heart in a petri dish.

The silicon frontier: can computers replace animal experiments?

A microbiologist turned mathematical modeller, Dr Jan-Ulrich Kreft is an Associate Professor in Computational Biology. Back in 2013, we awarded Jan funding to develop his idea for a computer simulation of the gut microbiome – the eGUT. Dr Timothy Foster joined Jan's team during his NC3Rs-funded PhD to further develop and validate the eGUT model to replace animal experiments.
