Training workshop: Zebrafish skin swabbing

Skin swabbing is a refined DNA sampling method that offers an alternative to fin clipping for genotyping zebrafish.

We have partnered with zebrafish skin swabbing experts at the University of Leicester to deliver training workshops suitable for anyone involved in DNA sampling of laboratory zebrafish. The session will be delivered at your own facility (UK only) to group sizes of up to ten people to allow for one-on-one support.

The content will be adapted to your current protocol, genes of interest and challenges and the sessions will include:

  • A presentation introducing the sampling technique and sample processing.
  • A practical session focused on the sampling technique.
  • Troubleshooting topics (e.g. restraint of conscious fish).
  • Guidance on adapting the technique to individual laboratories.
  • Remote support following the session for further troubleshooting and follow-up questions.
To request a zebrafish skin swabbing workshop at your institution, email tech3Rs@nc3rs.org.uk with the subject ‘swabbing workshop’.

Please enquire by Friday 14 November 2025.

Costs for these workshops will be covered by the NC3Rs.
