Latest news from the NC3Rs: March 2026
In March the NC3Rs celebrated British Science Week by taking part in eight "I'm a Scientist" online chats during school science lessons, answering questions from around 150 school students ranging from careers in science and what a day in the life of a scientist is like, to our work to change the way animals are used in research. We enjoyed reading an article from Dr Joanna Jenkinson MBE – Director of Research and Development Policy at ABPI – that explores the findings from a joint ABPI-NC3Rs landscape review of human relevant preclinical models published last month and how to accelerate the movement of innovative in vitro models being developed in academic labs across the UK into industry use for medicines development. With conference season in full swing, this week our Toxicology Team are sharing work on humane endpoints, refining acute toxicity testing and avoiding the use of two species in chronic toxicity studies at the SOT Annual Meeting, while our Animal Welfare team attend IAT Congress to share refinement resources with animal technicians and run a workshop on refined mouse handling. Next month, applications are closing for our Contracts for Innovation competition in partnership with Innovate UK. £2M is available to accelerate the adoption of non-animal approaches for pharmacokinetic prediction and cardiovascular safety – submit your application by Wednesday 15 April.
