Latest news from the NC3Rs: October 2025
Earlier this month, the Home Office released their annual statistics of scientific procedures involving animals in Great Britain in 2024. In her response, our Chief Executive highlighted the importance of the UK remaining a leader in global efforts to replace the use of animals – read Vicky’s full comment on LinkedIn. Whilst the annual statistics focus on the numbers it is important to not lose sight of the fact that for the animals that continue to be used, ensuring the highest standards of welfare remains essential. The latest instalment of our welfare webinar series covered refined, study-specific humane endpoints and early intervention strategies to minimise laboratory animal suffering. Thank you to the 300+ participants from 30 countries who joined the live sessions – the welfare webinar recording is available. October saw us celebrate a decade since we launched the Experimental Design Assistant (EDA) as part of our work to raise standards in the design and reporting of animal research. Ten years on and over 22,000 scientists around the world use the tool to support rigorous design, robust studies and reproducible science involving animals – register for our next virtual EDA workshop on Tuesday 25 November for a live demonstration and personalised feedback on your experimental design. Lastly, a reminder to submit your proposal for an industry-academic collaboration that advances 3Rs approaches in a key strategic area: oncology, cardiovascular science or new approach methodologies. Applications for our Business Interaction Vouchers funding scheme with the BBSRC close on 16.00, Tuesday 4 November.
